The UK's street food scene has gone from novelty to national institution in less than a decade. Led by London's extraordinary concentration of food markets and Manchester's growing roster of food halls and festivals, street food in the UK now rivals any in the world. Borough Market in Southwark is the benchmark — a working food market that has operated for over a thousand years and now hosts some of London's best food traders alongside artisan producers. Boxpark Shoreditch and Boxpark Wembley pioneered the container-park food concept. Maltby Street Market in Bermondsey is a more local, less touristy alternative. In Manchester, Mackie Mayor — a converted Victorian fish market in the Northern Quarter — houses a permanent collection of independent food traders. The Manchester Food & Drink Festival each October is one of the UK's best food events, filling Albert Square with the city's best restaurants and producers.

Borough Market is the most famous and consistently excellent. For a more local experience, try Maltby Street Market (weekends only) or Netil Market in London Fields. Street food in Brixton Village and Mercato Metropolitano is also outstanding.
