Berlin is the world's nightlife capital — a city where the culture of going out has been elevated to something approaching a civic institution. The roots of Berlin's club scene go back to the reunification of the city in 1990, when empty East Berlin warehouses became the crucible for a new kind of electronic music culture. Thirty years later, Berlin techno is a UNESCO cultural heritage and Berghain — located in a former power plant near Ostbahnhof — is one of the most famous and selective clubs in the world. But Berlin's nightlife is about much more than techno: Kreuzberg has a brilliant bar scene that ranges from Turkish-run späti (corner stores with outdoor seating) to craft cocktail bars; Neukölln is younger and more underground; Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg offer a more accessible, less intense alternative for visitors who want good bars without the four-hour Berghain queue.

Berghain is famously selective. Dress down, go alone or in small groups of two, arrive between 1-3am on a Sunday morning, don't talk at the door, and don't take photos. There is no guaranteed way in — but confidence and humility help.
No — Berlin has no mandatory closing time for venues. Clubs regularly run Friday through Monday without closing. The city operates on entirely different time norms to most European cities.
